Goal

Recent studies have shown that there are two major problems facing battlefield medicine: helpers lacking sufficient training and blood loss before reaching a medical facility.

Our small company is trying to solve both of these significant problems by creating and manufacturing training devices that are up to today’s standards.

We have developed a training tool that is necessary for learning how to stop bleeding.

During a military conflict 90% of deaths that occur in the pre-hospitalization phase are due to blood loss. A third of those cases are bleeding from the limbs which were not able to be stopped because of lack of appropriate tools or more often due to insufficient training. For example, using a tourniquet on a living person for learning purposes is nearly impossible due to the insufferable pain that occurs. This means that in reality the bleeding is not able to be stopped and the patient goes into shock. A patient in shock has a 10 times higher chance of dying.

Thus it is extremely important that a considerable amount of military personnel know how to apply a tourniquet properly and if necessary know how to tamponade a hemorrhage. This knowledge is needed during a crisis situation and could save countless lives.

Our device offers assisted training of stopping bleeding, i.e. indicating the pretension strength of the tourniquet and the trainee can correct it. When the pretension has been applied, the tourniquet can be tightened rapidly enough to stop bleeding which is shown by the light signals on the device. The device can also be used to assess the trainee’s activity during bleeding by showing how long it took to stop the bleeding, how efficient the trainee was and other parameters.

Primary feedback from the trainees has revealed that applying a tourniquet is much more difficult than first thought and the training made them much more aware of the difficulty of the situation.
